Attention Deficit Disorder is an outdated term for the disorder now known as Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, or ADHD. Symptoms of ADHD commonly occur in all children, but are much more severe, frequent and troublesome for those with the disorder. The "Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders" explains that children must show symptoms of ADHD to a greater degree than their peers for a period of longer than 6 months to be diagnosed with this disorder.
Inattentiveness
Children with ADHD are often easily distracted and forgetful. They frequently become bored if they have to focus on just one thing, especially if they have to do so for more than a few minutes. They often jump from one activity to the next, usually without completing the activity. Learning new things is difficult, as is following lengthy instructions. Homework assignments of ADHD children are often turned in incomplete or go missing altogether. Adults that interact with a child with ADHD may feel that the child is not listening to them.
Hyperactivity
This symptom makes it difficult to sit still, and it may seem as though these children are always on the move. Talkativeness, fidgeting and squirming are common. These children have difficulty staying quiet or participating in tasks or activities that require silence. They also frequently run or climb when it is inappropriate to do so.
Impulsivity
Many children with ADHD are very impatient and impulsive. They find it difficult to restrain their emotions and behavior, and often act without considering consequences. This may include blurting out inappropriate comments, snatching toys or other items they want away from other children, or not waiting their turn when playing games. They also frequently interrupt conversations and activities.
