Our lungs work hard for us every day, helping to ensure we have sufficient oxygen to power every function in our bodies. Considering the level of pollution in our air and our tendency to breathe shallowly, it can be helpful to give our lungs a boost. In addition to making a conscious effort to breathe more deeply, you can strengthen your lungs through the use of herbs like coltsfoot, elecampane and mullein.
Coltsfoot
Used for thousands of years to strengthen the lungs, coltsfoot clears out excess mucus from the lungs and bronchial tubes. Additionally, it soothes the mucus membranes in the lungs, and may assist with asthma, coughs, bronchitis and other lung ailments. Coltsfoot is available in dried form for tea or as an alcohol extract. It is best to consult a qualified herbal practitioner before using this or any herb to treat serious health conditions.
Elecampane
Elecampane is a large plant with yellow flowers that, when ingested, clears out excess mucus from the lungs. It is also known as a natural antibacterial agent for the lungs, helping to lessen infection particularly if you are prone to bronchitis or other lung infections, according to Natural Standard. Herbal practitioners often recommend 1 tsp. of the herb per cup of boiling water, drunk three times daily for two to three weeks.
Mullein
Herbal practitioners use the flowers and leaves of the mullein plant to make a natural lung tonic. Mullein helps clear excess mucus from the lungs, cleanses the bronchial tubes, and reduces any inflammation that may be present in the respiratory tract. A tea can be made from 1 tsp. of the dried herb to 1 cup of boiled water.
