The task of losing weight can be a daunting one, but there are many types of exercise that will put you on the path to successful weight loss. People traditionally think of aerobic exercise when they consider exercises to help trim the pounds, but aerobic exercise is only one of several types of exercise.

Aerobic Exercise

Aerobic exercises consist of exercises using large muscle groups working continuously over a long period of time. Aerobic exercises include walking, running, swimming, cross-country skiing, biking, rollerblading and stair climbing. Aerobic exercise increases the heart rate and keeps it elevated throughout the workout.

Weight Lifting

Weight lifting is seldom viewed as a type of exercise for aiding weight loss. However, lifting weights increases the size of your muscles, which results in your body using a greater number of calories every day. Pair weight lifting with cardio exercise for a workout that burns a lot of calories.

Interval Training

Interval training is a less traditional way to burn a lot of calories. Interval training consists of working at high intensity, followed by an active recovery period repeated several times during a given period of time. Interval training helps increase lactate tolerance.

Circuit Training

Circuit training involves alternating a series of high-intensity aerobic activities with a series of weight lifting sets. Once you finish with the 10 to 12 exercises, you can begin again. Each exercise lasts between 30 seconds and 2 minutes. Circuit training is said to burn up to 30 percent more calories than other weight lifting workouts.
