The flying side kick is one of the flashiest techniques in martial arts. The technique can be used to powerfully kick an opponent in the head. It is also frequently used in taekwondo demonstrations to fly over people and break boards. The flying side kick may seem like a challenging technique to master. But if you correctly practice each step of the kick, you can be soaring through the air sooner than you might think.
Find a Target
The flying side kick can be performed by kicking into the air, but it is easier to do it on a target. A good piece of equipment to use for your flying side kick is a heavy bag. Most heavy bags are durable enough to withstand the power of this kick. You can also have a training partner hold a kicking shield for you. It may be a good idea to have another person stand behind your training partner for extra support. It is easier to practice the flying side kick on a target because the target gives you a place to land your kick.
Move Forward
Leading to the kick, you can run or just take a couple of steps. Typically, doing a short run before you jump will give your kick more power. The running helps you to put some momentum behind the kick. If you run up to a target, you will need to figure the exact moment that you need to jump in order to perform the kick correctly. You also need to make sure that you jump with the correct foot.
Jump
You should jump off the floor with the foot that is not going to kick. Thrust the knee of the kicking leg up into the air to help you get enough height for your kick. Once you are in the air, turn your body sideways to the target. Keep your kicking leg cocked and ready out in front of you. Your other leg should be tucked underneath you. Keep both legs parallel to the floor as you fly though the air.
Kick
Extend your kicking leg and forcefully kick the target with the bottom of your heel. The momentum from the run should be transferred into the target. To execute the kick with proper form, clench your fists and keep your hands up. Your arms should not be hanging loosely during the kick.
Land
"Stick" the landing after you perform your flying side kick. It is important that you are able to do this kick without falling. You may not have the chance to fall and get back up in a real fight. If you kick a hanging heavy bag, then look out. After you kick the bag, it will probably swing back at you.
Practice
It will likely take you several attempts to get good at the flying side kick. Try starting the kick from various distances from the target to become more adaptable with this kick. Another good idea is to videotape yourself performing the kick so you can see if you have proper form. Eventually, you can try jumping over objects when you perform the flying side kick.
