You have some choices in how you choose to defend your safety. Rather than walking into a situation where you are forced to protect yourself physically or run for your safety, learn techniques that offer you protection before you actually need it. Self defense classes are full of effective physical defense techniques and moves, as well as advice and tips from your instructor.

Prevention

Avoid getting into a situation where you need to defend yourself, according to SurveillanceForSecurity.com. If you're home alone at night, close and lock all windows and doors. Put the deadbolts on. Turn a light on in at least one room of the house so passersby know someone is home. Steer clear of neighborhoods you know are dangerous. If you have no choice but to be in such a neighborhood, park your car so you can make a quick getaway should the need arise. When you exit your car, make sure all doors are securely locked before leaving it. If it has an audible security alarm, arm it.

Self Defense Classes

Enroll in self defense classes like taekwondo, karate, and judo. You don't need to become a black belt in these classes; you just need to learn basic, common sense self defense, says BestSelfDefenseTechniques.com. Along with learning self defense techniques, you'll learn how to discipline your mind. Self defense classes should not give you a false sense of security. Rather, they should teach you how to protect yourself long enough to get away.

Finger Whips

If you are physically attacked and your assailant is larger than you, don't rely on brute strength to save yourself. Instead, use the finger whip technique. Whip your hand and wrist as if you are flinging water off your hand. As you whip your hand, make sure it is very close to your attacker's eyes. Flick hard and strike his eyes with all four fingers. Make sure this move is going to be effective. Carry it out quickly before your attacker figures you are about to do something. This surprises your attacker because you don't signal your intent before you unleash the whipping move. It also causes a high degree of pain, to the point that he lets go of you after you have incapacitated him, according to Crime-Safety-Security.com.

Show Confidence

Walk with an air of confidence and awareness of your surroundings. If you have already taken a self defense class, this should help you to develop the self-confident walk and posture. Stand straight and tall, with your shoulders back. Walk with a purpose--don't amble aimlessly as if you are not sure where you are going. Bullies prefer to choose victims who present themselves as weak, according to SurveillanceforSecurity.com.

Clinch Attack

Duck away from your attacker's blows. If you are smaller than he is, slide under his arm and grab his arms--the "clinch". Attack him as if you were a rabid dog. Bite into his ear, cheek or nose until your teeth meet, then, shake your head back and forth. Use both of your hands to pull his head into your bite. Inflict as much damage as you can--you are fighting for your life, according to Crime-Safety-Security.com. As you're biting, he is trying to get loose so he can run away from you. Add knee strikes and hit him in the groin. Don't be polite; cause as much pain as you can. Stomp hard on the tops of his feet. As you do so, stomp hard enough to cause injury.
