Traditional western medicine relies on thyroid hormone replacement with synthetic hormones to treat abnormal thyroid conditions. The synthetic hormones do not affect the thyroid gland, but they place the correct level of hormones in the bloodstream. The thyroid, pituitary, and parathyroid glands work together to regulate the levels of hormones produced. Herbal remedies rely on natural substances that induce these glands to produce natural thyroid hormones in proper amounts.

Bladderwrack (Fucus vesiculosis)

Bladderwrack, a type of brown kelp seaweed, is an herbal aid to control hypothyroidism, or low thyroid hormone production. Bladderwrack contains a natural balance of minerals from the sea as well as significant amounts of iodine, an element necessary for the thyroid to produce hormones naturally. It is also a source of antioxidants. Bladderwrack may be listed as kelp or seaweed in herbal supplement ingredients lists.

Makandi (Coleus forskohlii)

Makandi is an herb used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine to treat hypothyroidism. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, Coleus forskohlii may trigger the thyroid to produce hormones.

Green Oats (Avena sativa)

Green oats, obtained from wild oat plants, stimulate the body's hormone production and are used in herbal medicine to relieve irritability and improve sexual function, according to PDRHealth. Green oats contain minerals and B vitamins that support general health as well as aiding in thyroid function.

Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis)

Hyperthyroidism is a condition where the thyroid produces too much hormone. Lemon balm reduces thyroid hormone, and can block the thyroid-stimulating antibodies that cause the thyroid to overproduce. Lemon balm is available as an extract, to be taken as directed by your doctor. Lemon balm tea is also effective, and may be used daily as needed. If you need to monitor a specific dosage, your doctor will recommend using the extract.

Motherwort (Leonurus cardiac)

Motherwort has been used for centuries to treat heart palpitations and depression, two symptoms of hyperthyroidism. HerbalRemediesWorld.com reports that Germany's government has approved motherwort as an herbal treatment for hyperthyroidism.

Bugleweed (Lycopus europea)

Bugleweed is widely accepted by herbal practitioners as an effective herbal remedy to suppress thyroid hormone production. It is most effective at the onset of hyperthyroidism, according to HerbalRemediesWorld.com. Bugleweed is available as a tincture. Add drops of the tincture to a beverage as directed.
