Overview

Loose skin can occur in individuals of all ages and sizes. It typically results when there is more skin than is necessary to cover the body. Often this occurs when body mass is lost at a faster rate than the skin can keep up with the changes, such as during rapid weight loss. This causes the skin to become loose instead of tightening around the body. Loose skin can also occur as individuals grow old and lose the elasticity in their skin. There are several things you can do to improve sagging skin.

Slow Down

If you are developing loose skin while dieting, the most important thing to do if you want to preserve your skin is to slow down the weight loss. If you continue losing weight at the pace that has created loose skin, you can cause permanent damage to your skin that may result in stretch marks. Loose skin is also more difficult to heal the looser it becomes. Slowing down will give your skin time to catch up and allow you to focus on other methods to help heal your skin.

Your skin's elasticity is greatly influenced by the amount of water stored in the skin's cells. Hydration is key to tightening your skin, so aim to drink at least eight glasses of water each day.

Moisturize

Your skin must be moist if it is going to pull itself back into shape and tighten around your body. With that in mind, moisturizing is essential. Apply moisturizer at least twice daily, including once at night. You might also consider wearing long-sleeve pajama shirts and pajama pants to hold the moisture in against your skin at night.

The goal of exercising isn't to put in long periods of intense work in an effort to lose weight, as this can worsen your skin's looseness. However, active movement has two key benefits: it moves and stretches your skin, keeping it pliable and easy to move, and it causes you to sweat, which helps keep your skin healthy. Instead of cardio workouts designed to burn calories, focus on exercise that will promote muscle growth and development -- this can help fill out your skin and make it easier to tighten.

Massage the Skin

Massaging the skin is one of the most effective methods of working the skin and making it more elastic and pliable. Gently massage your skin daily, preferably with a mustard oil, which helps promote skin health and tone.
