4 Ways to Prevent Anisocoria

1. Avoid Inflaming the Iris Muscle

Certain surgeries, such as cuts to extract cataracts, can greatly increase the likelihood of developing anisocoria in the future. Similarly, sports injuries, such as head traumas endured in hard contact sports (e.g. football and rugby), can strain or even tear the iris muscle and increase your odds of getting the condition. Along those lines, avoid activities, drugs or other agents that could inflame the iris muscle.

2. Treat Migraine Headaches

A certain kind of anisocoria, called transient anisocoria, has been long associated with migraines. Although transient anisocoria is considered benign, it can still be frustrating, given the many scary conditions which anisocoria can indicate.

3. Be Aware of Expiration Dates

Drugs with atropine-like properties can provoke pupil dilation. This kind of anisocoria presents in markedly different ways from the anisocoria which indicates more severe conditions, like Horner's Syndrome or oculomotor nerve palsy. If you suspect that a pharmacological reaction is responsible for your anisocoria, talk to your physician and do some sleuthing around your house for old medications that might be responsible. Eyedrops and inhalors are likely suspects.

4. Take Steps to Avoid Getting Horner's Syndrome

Horner's Syndrome can be caused by a number of unrelated conditions, such as stroke, tumor, inflammation, artery dissection and sinus disease. If you feel like you may be at risk for one of these conditions, talk to your doctor to develop a prevention regimen. To reduce the likelihood of strokes and tumors, in general, you can make changes to your lifestyle, diet and physical checkup schedule. Reduce your intake of foods that are high in simple carbohydrates and sugars, as these foods can get processed into compounds called Very Low-Density Lipoproteins (VLDLs) which can then cause artherosclerosis and possibly increase the likelihood of developing certain cancers and other diseases.
