Loss of appetite occurs occasionally for most people due to colds, viruses, injuries, emotional stress, or as a side effect of certain medications. More serious causes include cancer, cancer treatment, depression and kidney disease. Home remedies, such as natural herbs and an altered diet, may help improve appetite and support a person's overall health. According to the University of Illinois Medical Center, unexplained, persistent loss of appetite may demand medical attention.

Dandelion

Though often viewed as a common weed in America, dandelion is known in the field of natural medicine as a powerful herb and nutritious cooking ingredient. Dandelion contains rich amounts of vitamins A, C, B-complex and D, and essential minerals, including iron, potassium and zinc. Since dandelion is rich in antioxidants, it can help strengthen the immune system and prevent or reduce illnesses that may contribute to reduced appetite.
According to the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC), dandelion leaves are currently used to increase appetite, reduce water retention (bloating) and improve digestion. Dandelion may also help alleviate stomach pain and constipation that interferes with appetite. Dandelion may be utilized in dried leaf form, soaked as dried dandelion root in hot water to sip as "tea," or added to foods or beverages in powdered extract form. It is also found in various herbal supplements. Though dandelion is generally considered a safe and natural appetite remedy, it may pose side effects or interactions with other medications. People taking medications should gain approval from their doctor prior to taking it.

Cayenne Pepper

The substance that gives cayenne pepper its spicy flavor, known as capsaicin, holds medicinal properties. According to the UMMC, cayenne pepper is recognized throughout traditional Chinese, Indian, Japanese, and Korean medicines as an effective oral remedy for reduced appetite and digestive problems. Cayenne pepper can be consumed in fresh/raw or cooked form and is available in capsule and powder form, which can be added to beverages and foods. Since cayenne pepper is also used to promote weight loss in some individuals, underweight individuals should seek a doctor's approval and guidance prior to utilizing it.

Palatable Foods

People's favorite, or most palatable, food choices may help stimulate appetite. According to research published in "Physiology and Behavior" in July, 2007, reduced appetite in individuals who under-eat or restrict food seems to improve when palatable foods are presented. Thus, people with reduced appetite may benefit from consuming favorite childhood menu items, foods reminiscent of enjoyable holidays or events, or foods that carry pleasurable aroma, colors, textures or flavors. Since bland, less-palatable foods may have the opposite effect, replacing such foods with pleasing alternatives may prove helpful.
