A steam shower is unlike a traditional shower in that it immerses you in water vapors. A humidifiying steam generator produces the vapors. Steam showers are usually found in gyms and spas, but they are becoming a popular household item as well, according to home improvement expert Don Vandervort's HomeTips.com.
Types
Steam showers are relatively inexpensive and require only a few steps for installation, so home use is very plausible. Your current bathroom shower can be converted to a steam shower by adding a steam generator and moisture stall. Another home option is a ready-made steam shower, which requires the wiring to be hooked up. Also available are stand-alone steam shower units that do not require any additional installation.
Function
Steam showers have adjustable temperatures and require a moisture-sealed enclosure to prevent paint and wallpaper damage. The shower operates by siphoning water into a steam generator, heating water to the boiling point and sending the steam to a shower head. The resulting water vapor provides a steamy environment.
Features
Most steam showers have a variety of add-ons to enhance your experience. Aromatherapy pumps for oils are available if you prefer a fragrant shower. Some have digital controls that allow you to adjust temperature and duration of steam shower. You also have the option of music, lighting and remote controls on some models.
Benefits
Steam provides a wide array of benefits. It can open your pores and increase heart rate, which cleanses skin and speeds up metabolism. Steam also causes blood vessels to dilate, increasing circulation and providing relaxation. People with allergies, asthma and other upper respiratory conditions may benefit from steam showers. The vapors relax the lungs and open up air passageways, loosening mucus and making it easier to breathe.
Warning
Consult a physician before using a steam shower if you have heart problems, diabetes, high or low blood pressure, or are elderly or pregnant. Do not steam for more than 20 minutes at a time and stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water before and after. Stop showering if you feel light-headed or nauseated.
