If you're excited about an upcoming trip to the beach but feel less-than-thrilled about your figure, find a swimsuit to mask or improve the imperfections. Choose a swimsuit material, style or fabric pattern to flatter your body shape to divert the eye so you can swim or hit the sand in style.

Bust Size

Follow a suggestion from the Free Beauty Tips website and boost a small bust with a swimsuit that includes a top with padding or push-up styling and adjustable straps for added lift and contouring. A bathing suit created with textured fabric and gathers along the bust line can also increase the impact of a small bust. If you'd rather minimize a large bust, the Swimming.org website recommends a suit featuring wide-set straps to create an open neckline, an under wire for support and a top that's cut straight across to conceal cleavage.

Short or Tall

If you'd like to elongate the appearance of your legs or minimize the length of a long torso, "Cosmopolitan" magazine recommends choosing a swimsuit to create the illusion of a different body type. Make a petite frame look taller by opting for a high-cut swimsuit or a two-piece bathing suit featuring vertical stripes. Conversely, wear a swimsuit with horizontal stripes to shorten the appearance of a long torso. Make a long torso look more in proportion with a swimsuit that includes a belt, bows or cut outs to cut a visual line across your body.

Thick Waist

Adopt the appearance of a slim waist with a figure-flattering swimsuit featuring horizontal gathering along the waistline or an attention-grabbing print along the top and bottom to draw the eye away from your waist. Conceal a thick waist with a "tankini" swimsuit that pairs a bikini bottom with a long top that flares out to cover your midsection. You can also take a tip from "Ladies Home Journal" magazine and buy a suit with a Lycra band across the middle to cinch in your stomach and waist.

Pear Shape

Complement a body type featuring a smaller top and a heavier bottom, also known as a "pear shape," by wearing a colorful, padded top with a bottom featuring a short skirt or a slimming wrap-around cover up. Full-bottom figures can also benefit from mismatched suits with dark-colored bottoms and a brightly colored or patterned top, according to "Cosmopolitan."

Inverted Triangle

To balance a body style with a larger bust and a smaller bottom, also known as an "inverted triangle," wear a swimsuit that minimizes your bust line while building up your backside. Choose a one-piece suit with plain top half, but a swingy and colorful skirt to draw the eye. You can also pair a plain bikini top with an eye-catching bottom that features a belt, ruffles or a bold pattern.
