Flower essences are a foundation of energy medicine that aim to harmonize through emotional and spiritual well-being. The Bach Rescue Remedy is a stress relief formula originally created in the 1930s by Dr. Edward Bach, and is made from flowers chosen for their specific healing qualities. This remedy can help reduce the negative emotions associated with stress.

History

In 1917 Bach was diagnosed with a tumor and given three months to live. He survived for another 20 years, using nature as his lab, and spent the last eight years of his life devoted to his research regarding the powers of plants, creating a new system of medicine--flower essences.
Bach was a licensed doctor, bacteriologist and homeopath in London when he made the transition to unconventional healing methods, steering away from the stringency of modern medicine. He applied his knowledge of the human body, scientific theory and holistic healing in his process of discovery while studying the flowers and creating the essences.
He spent many years in trials, preparing thousands of plant remedies and testing the mental states associated with each one. Each of the 38 essences in the Bach flower remedy system correlates to a basic human emotion. Followers of this type of energy healing believe he had a strong intuitive understanding of the human psyche, as stated in "The Flower Essences Repertory."

Trapped Energy

The healing power of flower essences is purportedly due to the vibrational energy trapped in the dew that accumulated on the flower the day of harvest. This is very specific to the time of year, time of day and even phase of the moon. Bach gathered sun-infused dew drops from the blossoms, a method traditionally used by alchemists. Today the Bach Centre also uses a boiling method for many of its essences.

Emotional Healing

The Rescue Remedy formula contains a balance of five flower essences: cherry plum, clematis, impatiens, rock rose and Star of Bethlehem. Each flower has its own vibrational power of healing and calming effect. Specific traits of the flowers are associated with some emotional aspect of stress--cherry plum for fear of the mind breaking down, clematis for hope of the future but no care of the present, impatiens for lack of patience, rock rose for terror and fright, and Star of Bethlehem for shock.

Stress Relief

The Rescue Remedy was formulated to bring about courage in a time of strife from a terrible situation, or to calm the nerves while dealing with daily stresses. A "stress" can be anything that causes turmoil or grief.
The holistic philosophy of healing assumes that if stress is not dealt with, a person will present latent physical ailments and mental instability. This flower formula encourages stress relief through a balancing of physical and emotional states of energy.

Formula Types

Rescue Remedy is offered as a liquid in a dropper or sprays, as gels and balms, and even as candied pastilles for convenience and ease of application. Specific formulations for sleep, energy and pets are also available.
Rescue Kids is an alcohol-free version of the original formula. Rescue Sleep is a blend of Rescue Remedy and the essence of white chestnut, added for the elimination of repetitive thoughts that can occur at bedtime. Rescue Energy is the original remedy plus the essence of olive, which is used to restore vitality during times of mental or physical exhaustion.

Safety

The Bach flower remedies are considered safe for most people, and can be applied to pets and plants. Since the essences do not contain any constituents of the plant, there aren't any phytochemicals to react to, and there is little concern for cause of allergic reactions or interactions with medications.
