Many well known herbs that have been used for years as single herbs or combined to cleanse the colon. These include senna, cascara sagrada and triphala. Senna and cascara sagrada are herbs that can be taken in capsules as single herbs and are also often found in herbal teas with several herbs. These are best taken with slippery elm to reduce abdominal cramping.
Triphala is a combination of three herbs found in Ayurvedic, or Indian medicine. This is often used daily and is not considered habit forming as it is gentle and will not create diarrhea in most healthy people.

Work up to eating 2 to 3 tbls. per day or until you have a regular daily bowel movement. Some people only have two or three per week.
Drink plenty of plain water between meals to help move food through the GI tract.

Lemon Juice, Psyllium Seed Husk

Start each morning with a cup of hot water with half a lemon squeezed into it to prompt a colon cleanse. For a directed cleanse, you can add 1 tbls. of psyllium seed husks. These can be purchased at health food stores and online. Once you drink water, the husks increase in size and move through the colon to cleanse.
