The golf swing does not need to be complicated. In fact, players who can break their swing down into simple parts have the best chance of hitting the ball successfully. Stance, grip, balance and hip turn all affect your ability to build a solid and repeatable swing.

Stance

In taking your stance, make sure your left shoulder--for a right-handed golfer--is facing the target. Your left foot needs to be directly underneath your left shoulder. Your feet will be shoulder-width apart. Play the ball midway between your feet. When you are hitting your driver or a long wood, play the ball one ball-width closer to your front foot. Make sure your knees are flexed, permitting a balanced and easy weight shift when you swing the club.

Grip Strength

Players are advised to not squeeze the club too tightly, but on the first tee they often squeeze the club as tightly as possible and swing the club as hard as they can. This approach will only get the golfer in trouble. Grip the club at about "6" on a scale of 1 to 10, which is about the same as when you shake hands with someone.

Smooth Motion

Remove all tension from your body when your swing. Don't tighten your muscles because that will affect your backswing, downswing and follow-through. Keep a relaxed state of mind when you swing the club. Let your hips lead your swing. As you move your hands on the backswing, roll your hips in the opposite direction of your swing. That will help you maximize your backswing. Once you have gotten your hands to the trigger position, roll your hips in the opposite direction and then let your hands go through the hitting zone. By moving your hips first, you will generate power and accuracy on your swing.
