Bones, like any area in the body, can develop tumors that can become malignant or cancerous. Bone cancer can start in the bone or spread to the bone as a result of cancer that started in another area of the body. Cancer that starts in the bone is rare, however, like all forms of cancer the earlier it is caught the better. To help manage this condition it is important to be aware of the early signs of bone cancer and seek medical attention as soon as they appear.
Pain
In most cases, the first sign of bone cancer is pain in the affected area, states the National Cancer Institute. However, bone cancer does not always cause pain in the early stages. Initially, the pain may come and go, or be triggered by using the affected area. It may be sharp or just feel like a general ache. In some cases, the pain is worse at night and can disturb sleep. Over time without treatment, the pain eventually becomes constant and may interfere with using the affected part of the body.
Swelling
The American Cancer Society recommends being on the lookout for swelling. This can occur immediately or appear several weeks after pain starts. Since swelling can be a symptom of many conditions, it is important to have any inflammation evaluated. If the tumor is close enough to the skin surface, it may be possible to feel a lump. Some patients develop a lump that can be felt, but does not cause pain.
Weight Loss and Fatigue
According to the Mayo Clinic, bone cancer can also cause fatigue, and there may be unexplained weight loss. Along with a biopsy, various types of scans can help to detect the presence of a bone tumor. Since the signs and symptoms in the early stages of bone cancer can be very general, there may be a delay in seeking treatment. Any changes in general health should always be discussed with a health care professional.
Fever
Sometimes bone cancer in the early stages causes no symptoms and is only detected accidentally during an office visit for another condition. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons states that bone cancer can also cause very general symptoms such as a fever and sweating alternated with periods of feeling chilled.
