Rosai-Dorfman disease is a rare condition in which the body overproduces a particular type of white blood cell within the lymph nodes of the neck and body. This condition is diagnosed most frequently in African-American patients under age 20, according to the Merck Manual, an online medical encyclopedia for health professionals. The symptoms of Rosai-Dorfman disease can vary significantly based upon which part of the body is affected. Patients who develop any of the symptoms of Rosai-Dorfman disease should seek further care from a medical professional.

Swollen Lymph Glands

The most common symptom of Rosai-Dorfman disease is significant swelling of the lymph glands, report health officials with the National Organization for Rare Disorders. In healthy patients, the lymph glands serve to remove toxic pathogens or waste from the bloodstream. Extensive swelling of the lymph glands in patients with Rosai-Dorfman disease is typically painless, but can cause the lymph nodes to noticeably protrude from the neck or affected body region. Swelling is generally constant and may persist for several years before resolving.

Fever

Patients can develop a mild or low-grade fever as a symptom of Rosai-Dorfman disease, explain Drs. Hameed, Hussain and Riaz in a January 2008 article published in "Annals of Pubjab Medical College." Fever symptoms can persist for several months and may contribute to additional side effects including sweating, chills, headache or body aches. Patients who develop fever symptoms should seek medical care immediately as this symptom of Rosai-Dorfman disease can also be a sign of an alternate medical problem.

Skin Rash

A skin rash can appear as a symptom of Rosai-Dorfman disease in certain patients, warns the Merck Manual. Affected patients can develop red, irritated patches of skin across their bodies that persist over time. In certain patients, the skin rash may appear dry or itch. Skin rash symptoms should be discussed with a medical professional as soon as possible if they occur.
