Chinese Herbs for Menstrual Bleeding

Chinese herbs reduce abnormal or profuse menstrual bleeding. Some Chinese herbs are cooling and stop abnormal bleeding when you have excessive heat--characterized by bright red menstrual blood, irritability, excessive thirst and a red face. Other Chinese herbs are astringent and stop abnormal bleeding when you are deficient or weak, characterized by fatigue and a pale complexion. Another group of Chinese herbs that stop bleeding also improve blood circulation. These herbs help if you have dark menstrual blood with clots and sharp pain with your periods. The last group of Chinese herbs for menstrual bleeding are warming. They are beneficial when you tend to be cold, have long periods, a pale face, and low energy.

Cooling Herbs

Da ji, also known as Japanese thistle, cools the blood and treats profuse menstrual bleeding. You can take it when you have excessive bleeding combined with symptoms such as excessive thirst, red face and irritability.
Another herb called xiao ji, or field thistle, also cools the blood and treats abnormal menstrual bleeding or spotting between periods.
Di yu, known as garden burnet root, cools the blood, stops bleeding and treats abnormal menstrual bleeding and bleeding between periods.
Huai hua--Japanese pagoda tree flower--is another cooling Chinese herb that reduces profuse menstrual bleeding of bright red blood. It also treats bleeding hemorrhoids and blood in the urine.
Ce bai ye, or platycladus leaves, reduces excessive menstrual bleeding and external bleeding due to trauma. Other benefits of ce bai ye are that it treats blood in the urine, coughing with excessive phlegm and hair loss.

Astringent Herbs

Xian he cao, or agrimony, restrains the blood to reduce bleeding and treats excessive menstrual bleeding when you are weak, tired and pale. An added benefit of xian he cao is that it also relieves diarrhea, kills parasites, reduces skin sores and improves energy.
Bai ji, also known as bletilla, cools heat, restrains the blood and reduces bleeding. Bai ji also treats skin sores and swellings.
Zong lu pi, or trachycarpus stiple fiber, reduces excessive menstrual bleeding, bloody nose and bleeding hemorrhoids.

Herbs that Promote Blood Circulation

San qi, or pseudoginseng, promotes blood circulation and stops bleeding. It reduces excessive menstrual bleeding and postpartum bleeding. Other benefits of san qi include treating bloody nose, coughing of blood and blood in the urine. It is also a popular herb to relieve pain, making it beneficial for traumatic injuries, swelling and bruising.
Pu huang, commonly known as cattail pollen, promotes blood circulation and stops bleeding to treat uterine bleeding, bloody nose, coughing of blood, blood in the urine and traumatic injury. Similar to san qi, pu huang also relieves pain making it beneficial for painful periods and postpartum abdominal pain.

Warming Herbs

Ai ye is also known as wormwood leaf. It warms the uterus, reducing excessive menstrual bleeding and bleeding during pregnancy. Ai ye also relieves pain, treats irregular and painful periods and postpartum abdominal pain. An added benefit of ai ye is that it relieves itching, coughing and wheezing.
