TCA, which stands for trichloroacetic acid, is used in dermatological treatments to improve the appearance of skin. The University of Virginia Health System notes that TCA peels are administered by dermatologists or trained technicians. The TCA formula used during the procedure can come in different strengths, depending on the extent of your skin damage. No anesthesia is required during the application of a TCA peel.
Wrinkle Smoothing
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, TCA peels are primarily used to eliminate superficial and medium-depth wrinkles. The peel is not as powerful as some other chemical peels on the market, so if you have deep wrinkles you might consider another solution. To get the full wrinkle-busting effect of a TCA peel, multiple sessions may be necessary to fully remove the damaged superficial skin layers.
Blemish Reduction
TCA peels can also be used to reduce visible blemishes to the skin. The University of Virginia Health System notes that, like wrinkles, TCA is most effective on superficial blemishes. If you get a TCA peel to help reduce the appearance of a skin blemish, two or more peels may be necessary to reach your desired results.
Corrected Skin Pigment
TCA peels also correct pigment problems in the skin, such as discolorations caused by sun damage. Even though the peels can correct discolorations, talk to your dermatologist before using them for this purpose. The University of Virginia warns that skin discoloration can be an unintended side effect of this treatment.
