Digoxin is a cardiovascular drug that makes the heart pump better in patients with heart failure and also prevents rapid irregular heart beats in patients with atrial fibrillation. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Digoxin toxicity can be caused by high levels of the drug in the blood or a decreased tolerance to the drug. Digoxin toxicity can cause death and should be reported to the doctor.

Cardiac Symptoms

According to NIH, Digoxin toxicity may cause different types of arrhythmias, or abnormal heart rhythms. If patients experience arrhythmias such as asystole and ventricular fibrillation, death could occur. Other cardiac symptoms of Digoxin toxicity include dizziness, confusion, fainting, irregular heartbeats and palpitations. NIH further states that abnormal heart rhythms are the first signs of Digoxin toxicity in infants and children

Gastrointestinal Symptoms

According to NIH, gastrointestinal symptoms of Digoxin toxicity include loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. NIH also states that gastrointestinal disturbances are the first signs of Digoxin toxicity in adults. Nausea and vomiting are not frequent symptoms of Digoxin toxicity in infants and children.

Central Nervous System Symptoms

NIH states that neurologic symptoms of Digoxin toxicity include headache, dizziness, confusion, hallucinations and weakness. NIH further states that these neurological symptoms may continue to be present even after the other symptoms of Digoxin toxicity have resolved

Visual Disturbances

Digoxin toxicity causes various visual disturbances. Patients may experience blurred vision, blind or bright spots in vision, yellow green vision or they may see halos around objects. NIH further states that visual changes may continue even after other symptoms of Digoxin toxicity have resolved
