Traditional reflexology focuses on points of the feet and ankle. The American Massage Therapy Association notes that pressure points in this area are thought to correspond to systems throughout the body. The therapist will work the points with superficial strokes, and then dig in for deep work with the thumb and finger. A number of tools can be employed to aid in reflexology sessions.

Trigger Point Reflexology Tools

The most common tool that you'll see used in reflexology sessions is a trigger point relief tool. The therapist can use this simple tool, commonly made of wood or plastic, to dig into deep pressure points without putting stress on his hands. The tool is held in the palm of the hand, and contains a dull point that is pushed into the reflexology point on the foot.

Massage Rollers

You can use a massage roller to stimulate the reflexology points on the base of the foot without the assistance of a massage therapist. Massage rollers are made of wood or plastic, and sometimes contain small nubs or grooves for additional stimulation. Stand on the roller with a bare foot and move it back and forth so that the sole of your foot is stimulated. While this technique can't work deeply into specific reflexology points, it's a quick and easy way to enjoy some of the benefits of reflexology.

Hot Stones

A reflexologist can use hot stones to warm up the tissue of the foot and promote the healthy flow of energy. Associated Bodywork and Massage Professionals notes that massage stones come in all shapes and sizes, and can be heated up to 140 degrees Fahrenheit. These stones are used to bring blood to the area and prepare the tissue for deeper work. The therapist might start the massage session by placing a number of hot stones on the base of your foot. After the tissue is warm, the therapist can dig in for deeper work.
