The genital area covers the portion of the body with external reproductive organs, including the penis and scrotum for males and the external portion of the vagina, such as the labia, for females. Irritation to the skin from diseases and infections may cause itching for people in this sensitive area. Treatment for genital itching varies, depending on the reason for the condition.
Vaginal Infections
Females are susceptible to vaginal infections. Several common vaginal infections include yeast infection, vaginosis and trichomonas vaginitis. Each of these infections causes a vaginal discharge that can cause itching and soreness in the genital area. The itching may make sleeping difficult and sexual relations painful, according to the Merck Manuals. Treating the itching associated with vaginal infections includes clearing up the offending condition. Medications such as antibiotics and antifungal medications help treat the infection and itching. Using a hydrocortisone cream or taking oral antihistamines can help decrease the itching while the infection heals. Proper genital hygiene can help prevent further vaginal infections.
Tinea Cruris
Tinea cruris, also referred to as jock itch, is a ringworm infection in the genital area. Despite its name, ringworm is a fungal infection that causes a rash on the skin. The genitals are a common area for individuals to experience ringworm because the fungus thrives in warm, moist environments. Individuals who have diabetes or an impaired immune system have an increased risk of getting tinea cruris. Symptoms of jock itch include redness, itching and burning in the genital area and along the inner thighs. Treatment for this condition includes using an antifungal medication directly on the rash. Over-the-counter antifungal medications come as sprays, ointments, lotions, powders or cream preparations. Showering daily and keeping the genital area dry decreases the likelihood of developing a fungal infection.
Pubic Lice
Pubic lice, also referred to as crabs, is a sexually transmitted disease. The lice are wingless insects that feed on blood. This is the most contagious STD and an infestation occurs 90 percent of the time after sex with an infected partner, according to MayoClinic.com. Symptoms of pubic lice include extreme itching, visible lice and eggs in pubic hair, and lesions on skin due to bites from the parasite. Treatment of the infestation includes using over-the-counter topical medications designed to kill the parasites. Prevention of public lice includes avoiding sexual relations and sharing clothing or linens with infected individuals.
