When considering a cream for your dry skin, choose ingredients that can help your skin attract and retain moisture as well as shed dry, dead skin cells. Creams are richer than lotions because they contain more oil than water. A dry skin cream may also be able to provide you with the daily sun protection you need while it moisturizes. Dry skin that is scaly and itchy may be the sign of a medical problem that requires a doctor's treatment.

Lactic Acid

Lactic acid is an alpha-hydroxy acid that comes from milk. In dry skin creams, lactic acid helps the skin retain its natural oils and moisture, while shedding dry skin cells to reveal the healthier skin that lies underneath. Lactic acid is used in higher concentrations for chemical skin peels. Creams with lactic acid may cause some stinging or burning; if a lactic acid cream causes irritation, discontinue use.

Hyaluronic Acid

Dry skin creams with hyaluronic acid are a good choice because they help the skin retain water, according to the American Academy of Dermatology's Aging Skin website. Your skin contains less natural hyaluronic acid as you age than it did when you were younger.

Dimethicone

Dimethicone helps attract and hold moisture to the skin. Dimethicone may relieve the itching of dry skin.
