The Almighty Cleanse, a seven-day herbal colon cleansing program, claims to restore your body to its natural state of good health by expelling fecal matter and built-up impurities from your intestinal walls, according to the company's website. However, like all herbal remedies, the Almighty Cleanse may initiate its own side effects or cause negative interactions with your prescription medications. Therefore, you should speak with your doctor about the benefits and risks associated with herbal remedies before you use the Almighty Cleanse at home.
Identification
Almighty Cleanse is an over-the-counter, two-part dietary supplement that cleanses your colon and promotes frequent and healthy bowel movements, according to the company's website. Almighty Cleanse can also help you alleviate your allergy symptoms, PMS, fatigue, depression, bad breath, bloating and gas, the company claims, as well as help you lose weight.
Theories/Speculation
Your body eliminates food and bodily waste through your colon, states Almighty Cleanse founder Danny Vierra. However, because of a poor diet that generally consists of at least 25 percent fast food, your colon becomes clogged and unable to function properly, which in turn hinders your digestion and causes chronic constipation, Vierra states, which causes disease and weight gain. You can reverse this process by using Almighty Cleanse to remove the toxins from your colon, which will help you absorb nutrients better and return you to a state of good health, Vierra states.
Methodology
The first part of Almighty Cleanse, Formula One, contains herbs such as senna, aloe, cascara sagrada and black walnut hulls, which gently regulate your digestive tract and increase the size and frequency of your bowels, says Vierra. Then, the second part of the cleanse, Formula Two, contains herbs such as psyllium husks, slippery elm bark and flaxseeds, which gently "scrub" your intestinal walls and removes built-up food particles and toxins, and leaves your colon clean and healthy, according to Vierra. The product works over the span of approximately seven days, says Vierra.
Considerations
Although you do not have to change your eating habits for the product to work, Vierra suggests that you drink 16 oz. of very warm water infused with fresh lemon juice every morning of the cleanse, and that you follow one of his suggested diets during the cleanse. The first diet, the basic plan, allows you to remain on your regular diet and supplement it with fresh fruits and vegetables. The second diet, the master plan, suggests that you eliminate all animal foods and dairy products, and eat only raw fruits and vegetables, whole grains, brown rice, oatmeal and beans. The third diet, the almighty plan, suggests that you drinking only fresh fruit and vegetables juices during all seven days of your cleanse.
Expert Insight
There is little scientific evidence that supports or invalidates the benefits of colon cleansing, says Dr. Michael Picco, an assistant professor of medicine and gastroenterology consultant at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine in Florida. However, Dr. Picco states that your bowels naturally eradicate waste materials from your body without the use of pills or special diets, and that colon cleansing can dehydrate your body. Dr. Picco suggests that you speak with your conventional medical doctor before doing a colon cleanse, and that you stay well hydrated throughout the cleanse to avoid dehydration.
