Probiotics are a beneficial type of bacteria that aid in gut health and immune strength. There are numerous probiotic supplements on store shelves, but many people are unaware of dietary sources that provide these friendly bacteria. Any fermented food product typically provides a source of probiotics. According to the Dairy Council of California, it may be better to consume probiotics from food rather than a supplement due to a synergestic effect that food nutrients have with probiotics.
Yogurt
Yogurt is a fermented milk product that contains specific strains, or cultures, of probiotics. Cornell University states that two strains of bacteria are required by law to be included in yogurt: Lactobacillus bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilus. Most yogurt products will contain two or three probiotic cultures. Greek yogurt contains similar cultures, however, it is strained of all liquid creating a thicker texture. Both yogurt and Greek yogurt provide a good source of dietary probiotics.
Kefir
Kefir is another fermented milk product that is rich in probiotic strains. While yogurt has two or three strains of good bacteria, kefir has up to 10, making it an extremely rich source of probiotics. It can be made from cow's milk, goat's milk or nondairy milk, providing a rich dietary source for dairy tolerant and intolerant people alike. Various types of kefir can be found in most health food stores.
Miso
Miso is a paste made from fermented soybeans. It contains a good source of probiotics and can be consumed in a variety of ways. The most well-known use for miso is in a soup. Combining water with a small amount of miso paste and scallions, mushrooms or tofu creates a delicious soup. It can also be used for flavoring in recipes and brushed on poultry or salmon before grilling. Miso is found in most supermarkets.
Sauerkraut
Sauerkraut is fermented cabbage. It is the most hypoallergenic dietary source of probiotics and is easily digestible. The best ways to eat sauerkraut is as a topping on a favorite sandwich, wrap or baked potato. It can be made at home but is easy to find in a local grocery store.
