Fatigue is a feeling of exhaustion or lack of energy that can interfere with daily functioning. It may appear as a symptom of conditions ranging from the common cold to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and is a defining characteristic of chronic fatigue syndrome, though it may also result from simple lack of sleep. There are a variety of cheap and effective fatigue remedies, all of which can be easily incorporated into your daily life to help overcome this troubling symptom.
Low-Intensity Exercise
While usually considered a tiring activity, physical exercise can actually provide relief from fatigue. According to the University of Georgia, low-intensity exercises like walking or cycling can reduce fatigue by 65 percent while boosting energy levels by as much as 20 percent.
Exercise is thought to fight fatigue by improving circulation to the brain while triggering production of neurotransmitters responsible for alertness, such as serotonin and endorphins. While 30 to 45 minutes per day is ideal, even 10 to 15 minutes of daily exercise can be helpful for fighting fatigue. Water aerobics, leisurely walking, yoga and cycling are adequate low-intensity exercises for increasing alertness.
Herbal Stimulants
Herbs with stimulating properties can be useful for temporarily fighting fatigue. Yerba mate, guarana, Sida cordifolia and Korean ginseng are among the many stimulating herbs used to increase energy and vitality. According to the National Institutes of Health, ginseng may help reduce fatigue brought on by a number of different causes. While more evidence is needed, Korean ginseng may help improve energy when used in conjunction with healthy lifestyle habits like diet and exercise.
Yerba mate (Ilex paraguariensis) is an herbal tea that contains caffeine and other stimulating compounds. It is also rich in minerals like magnesium that may help prevent caffeine-induced side effects like insomnia. Guarana---another caffeine-rich plant---is frequently used in energy supplements for its stimulating properties.
To prevent dangerous side effects and drug interactions, ask your doctor before adding an herbal supplement to your health regimen.
Naps
While a full-night's rest is ideal for optimal energy levels, short naps can also help restore alertness in some situations. According to the National Transport Commission, periodic naps are an effective means of fighting fatigue and may help prevent accidents in truck drivers and other transport workers.
While it may not be possible to nap every day, simply closing your eyes and breathing deeply for two to 10 minutes can relieve fatigue caused by mundane tasks like work or studying. Naps lasting 15 to 20 minutes are best, as longer naps may interfere with night-time sleep.
