Over-the-counter wrinkle creams cannot perform miracles. If you're looking for a significant difference in skin texture and look, you will need to talk to a dermatologist about a prescription cream or consider more invasive treatments such as chemical peels or laser procedures. For general improvement, a number of over-the-counter creams can help.

Vitamin A

Retinol is a form of vitamin A that is widely used in the more expensive anti-aging creams. Retinol works as an antioxidant, neutralizing free radicals and preventing them from breaking down the skin and causing aging in the form of wrinkles or discoloration. Retinoic is the prescription form of vitamin A, while retinol can be found in over-the-counter creams. Creams containing vitamin A should not be used during pregnancy. According to the Mayo Clinic, they increase the risk of birth defects.

Alpha Hydroxy Acids

AHAs act as exfoliants, getting rid of old, damaged skin and uncovering smooth new skin. AHAs are especially useful for people dealing with hyperpigmentation. Although they are natural acids obtained from fruits, they are strong enough to cause sensitivity to the sun and redenning of the skin in some people. Always wear sunscreen when using AHAs creams on a regular basis.

Coenzyme Q10

Coenzyme Q10 is naturally produced by the body, although production declines as you age. Valued because of its antioxidant properties and ability to fight stress, Coenzyme Q10 can help the skin remain softer and might help eliminate wrinkles around the eyes. Not many studies have been conducted on the efficacy of the ingredient or how much of it is needed to make a difference, so Coenzyme Q10 might not be the most effective ingredient, according to Smart Skincare. When searching for anti-aging creams, choose one that has Coenzyme Q10 as part of the formula, but not as the main ingredient.

Other Anti-Aging Elements

A number of other ingredients are commonly used in anti-aging creams. The Mayo Clinic recommends looking for copper peptides, kinetin and green tea extracts. Beauty products and ingredients are not regulated by the FDA, so it's up to you to pay attention to side effects, latest research and effectiveness.
