There are many different herbs on the market that can aid in kidney function. Many of these herbs accomplish this by helping drain out any excess fluid or kidney stones. This helps prevent the common kidney infections that hinder proper kidney function. Though many of these herbs are meant as a preventative treatment for these conditions, some work as treatments for active kidney complications.
Cranberry
According to the University of Maryland, the cranberry has been used as a food and a medicine for centuries. Native Americans utilized it to treat conditions and diseases in the bladder and kidneys. Cranberry is considered a preventative treatment for infection in the kidneys and urinary tract. This condition is most commonly associated with the presence of the E. coli bacteria. Cranberry juice makes your urine acidic, killing any E. coli bacteria that inhabit your kidneys and urinary tract.
Goldenrod
The herb goldenrod is considered a topical treatment for the healing of wounds, according to the University of Maryland. However, when ingested, it also has diuretic tendencies. Diuretic properties of goldenrod have allowed it to be used successfully as a preventative and treatment for kidney stones, as well as for inflammation in the urinary tract.
Burdock
Georgetown University says burdock root was a key component used by Meskwaki women during labor. The roots of burdock have also been used to treat sexually transmitted diseases. Due to burdock's anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and diuretic effects, it has been utilized in the treatment of kidney stones.
Horsetail
The University of Maryland says horsetail has been used as an herbal remedy since the ancient Roman and Greek era. It has traditional use as a diuretic due to its ability to rid the body of any excess fluid through increased urine output. It has been used by people with a history of uric acid kidney stones to successfully increase urine output.
