There are several natural dietary sources of omega-3 fatty acids, such as nuts, seeds and cold-water fish. But these are not typically children's favorites, and the toxins in many fish make parents wary of putting them on their family's dinner table. Fortunately, there are a wide variety of child-friendly foods fortified with omega-3. According to alive.com, eczema, constipation, certain allergies, ADD and other learning disabilities have been linked to diets deficient in omega-3.
Trail Mix
At least some children will be pleased to enjoy an omega-3 trail mix. This can be made by combining walnuts, cashews, sunflower seeds and dried fruit. Keep in mind not all nuts and seeds contain significant levels of omega-3.
Eggs
Several different egg producers offer eggs fortified with omega-3 fats. Of course, the only way to get the omega-3 into the egg is to get it into the chicken. These eggs come from chickens fed a special diet of alfalfa, corn, soybean and flaxseeds. One such egg can contain up to 200 mg of omega-3, more than three times the amount found in a typical egg. Though harder to find, the same type of special diet produces milk with higher levels of omega-3.
Chewables
Some of top-quality omega-3 products for adults and children have chewable products for babies and older children. These kid-friendly omega-3 snacks include gummy fish, gummy worms, fruit-flavored gels and effervescent water-soluble drops.
Paste
Fish oil extracts can be made into a paste rich in omega-3. Such pastes and extracts are commercially available in a variety of brands and flavors. Not only can they be eaten directly, they can also be mixed into applesauce, shakes or other snacks.
