MS or multiple sclerosis is a difficult condition to treat. There are many different forms of MS. Some forms cause symptoms that are constantly present while other forms go through periods of remissions and flares. Multiple sclerosis affects each person differently so there is no one treatment approach that works for all patients. However, there are some general MS treatment options that can be discussed with a health care provider. It may take some time to find the right combination of therapies.
Medications
Since there is currently no cure for multiple sclerosis, the goal of treatment is to attempt to modify disease activity and reduce symptoms. There are several medications including those called interferons which strengthen the immune system. Other medications work to inhibit the body from attacking itself. How these medications work is still not well understood and many have side effects. Other medications that help to manage pain or inflammation may be taken during periods of exacerbations. It may take some time to find the right combination and dose.
Exercise
Specially designed exercise programs can also help to mange the many symptoms that occur with MS. The MS Society warns that being inactive with MS can lead to even more muscle weakness and soreness. Exercise must be balanced with rest and done at an appropriate level. Overheating is an issue for those with MS so care must be taken to stay cool. Local MS Society chapters and MS Centers may provide information on locations that provide specialized land, water and yoga classes that are designed for those with the disease.
Physical and Occupational Therapy
The National Institutes of Health suggest trying physical and occupational therapy to help manage symptoms. A physical therapist can provide information on exercises that are appropriate. This can be combined with using modalities such as heat, ice, braces and adaptive equipment. Occupational therapists can help make adjustments at a place of employment and at home to make daily tasks easier.
Thunder God Vine
According to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, Thunder God Vine is a plant used in traditional Chinese medicine that may help to fight inflammation and calm an overactive immune system. It can be taken orally or applied to the skin. However, much more research is needed to fully determine its effectiveness. Thunder God Vine must be extracted properly from the root of the plant and it can cause severe side effects if used incorrectly. Checking with a doctor or pharmacist first can help to avoid complications.
Meditation
Stress has been linked to many chronic conditions and it can contribute to the severity of MS symptoms. In addition, with MS it is important to allow the body to rest adequately as fatigue is a common symptom for many patients. The University of Maryland Medical Center states that meditation and relaxation therapies are generally safe ways to help control stress and allow the body to rest. There are specific techniques such as relaxation response, autogenic training, guided imagery and mindfulness forms; try various techniques to see which one works best.
