OneTouch manufactures blood glucose meters for individual use in the home setting. By checking blood sugar frequently, diabetics are able to monitor their blood sugar trends related to eating, exercise and stress. OneTouch meters are simple to use and portable.
Monitors
OneTouch has three blood glucose monitors available as of 2010. The models range in complexity and price, based on the features. The UltraMini is the smallest meter available from OneTouch. It features a sleek design, which comes in six different colors. The features are very basic, giving blood glucose readings in five seconds, but without additional bells and whistles. The Ultra2 offers a larger screen and allows users to view their blood glucose averages. Finally, the UltraSmart meter is the most sophisticated of the three, allowing users to input additional information like averages, foods eaten, exercises and lab results.
Test Strips
OneTouch offers test strips, which can be used in any OneTouch monitor. Unlike some blood glucose test strips, OneTouch strips require very small drops of blood for accurate results. This enables users to test on areas like the palm and forearm, giving sensitive fingertips a break. Test strips may be purchased in quantities of 25 to 100.
Lancets and Lancing Device
Lancets used with the OneTouch systems are designed to offer users the least painful lancing process possible. Several lancing devices are available depending on which meter is chosen. The Ultra2 and UltraMini come with a compact lancing device that allows for nine different depth settings. OneTouch also offers the UltraSoft sampler, which is longer than the compact model and has seven depth settings instead of nine.
Control Solution
In order to ensure that test results are accurate, monitors must be tested with a high and low control solution. OneTouch recommends that control solution tests be performed a minimum of once a week, and each time a new vial of test strips is opened.
Care
OneTouch meters should be kept in a cool place, but not in the refrigerator. If the monitor becomes dirty, wipe with a wet cloth, using a gentle soap if necessary. Alcohol and other chemicals are too strong to be used on the monitor.
