Pressure Point Massage Techniques

Pressure point massage, otherwise known as trigger point therapy, seeks to relax large areas of the body through the focus on a singular point of restriction or tension. According to the Association of Bodywork and Massage Professionals, these trigger points are areas of tissue that are highly sensitive when compressed, and the pain associated with them can be referred to nearby muscles.

Sustained Pressure

Accupressure.com suggests using firm, sustained pressure to relieve any tense pressure points. Instead of rubbing the point, place your thumb or fingers directly on top of it, and gradually increase pressure for up to three minutes. Since these points are so sensitive, you should build up pressure slowly during this work. While this pressure point technique should not be painful, the recipient may feel a slight discomfort as your fingers dig in and the tense muscles that make up the point gradually relax.

Pressure Point Tool Work

There are a number of tools on the market that will help you exert an even greater amount of focused pressure to relieve the tension in the underlying point. These tools, sometimes known as trigger point devices, contain a handle that you can firmly grip as you dig the nub into the underlying point. You can use the trigger point tool on a single minute, three minutes or longer, depending on the amount of relief your client experiences.

Heat Techniques

Once you've located the pressure points, consider starting with the application of heat. Heating pads will relax the muscles that surround the pressure point, making the initial compression less painful. Once heat is applied to the area, you will have an easier time digging into the point with your sustained pressure technique. You'll also be able to get deeper into the tissue in a shorter amount of time. As you work on one pressure point, move the heat source to another so it is warm when you are ready to switch.
