Scope mouthwash is produced by the Procter & Gamble company. According to the Scope product website, "Scope's active ingredients have been shown in clinical studies to significantly reduce plaque." Scope is also used to fight the bacteria that cause bad breath. To use Scope effectively, rinse or gargle with Scope for 30 seconds after brushing your teeth. The main active ingredient in Scope is cetylpyridinium chloride. This ingredient, in combination with the other ingredients, works to reduce plaque and prevent gum disease.

Cetylpyridinium chloride and domiphen bromide

Cetylpyridinium chloride and domiphen bromide are antimicrobial agents that work to kill the bacteria that cause bad breath. Curehunter.com describes cetylpyridinium chloride as a "...bactericidal surfactant used as a topical antiseptic for skin, wounds, mucous membranes, instruments, etc.; and also as a component in mouthwash and lozenges."

Alcohol

Denatured alcohol is used in Scope mouthwash because of its antimicrobial properties and it keeps the bottle of Scope germ free after it has been opened. The alcohol also helps produce a refreshed feeling in the mouth.

Other Ingredients

Other ingredients in Scope include the following: glycerin, which helps retain moisture in the product; sodium saccharin, which acts as a sweetener; benzoic acid, sodium benzoate; FD&C Blue #1; FD&C Yellow #5, which is found in the original mint flavored mouthwash; and polysorbate 80.
