Many organizations and companies, including Estee Lauder, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Avon and even the Washington Redskins football team, have begun breast cancer awareness campaigns, but the original campaign was started in 1985. The campaign declared October as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and has continued to support goals, education and events around this issue ever since.
History
According to the America Cancer Society (ACS), the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM) campaign began in 1985 and grew to include ACS as well as many public service, government and professional organizations. In addition to the partnerships, NBCAM had support from public figures, one of the first of which was breast cancer survivor and former First Lady Betty Ford, who spoke publicly about detection and treatment.
Goals
The original goal of the National Breast Cancer Awareness campaign was to promote the importance of early detection and prompt treatment. NBCAM's website emphasizes the need for women to be educated and empowered so they can take control of their breast health. This includes encouraging women to conduct self-exams on their breasts, have annual mammograms and keep regular visits with their healthcare provider.
Programs
Various programs and events involved with the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month take place throughout the year. Some of the programs noted by the American Cancer Society include the National Cancer Information Center, which has cancer specialists available to answer questions seven days a week, 24 hours a day; the "Breast Cancer Treatment Guidelines," published by the National Comprehensive Cancer Network; and Look Good... Feel Better, a program to help women improve their appearance during cancer treatment.
Research
Another important factor within NBCAM is research. The American Cancer Society, for example, has been working with the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences to learn more about genetic and environmental links to breast cancer through the Sister Study. This research began in 2004 and spans over 10 years. Research of breast cancer is also promoted in the breast cancer awareness initiative through the sharing of information between medical professionals and all cancer organizations.
Considerations
Even though the breast cancer awareness campaign is focused on one month, events take place throughout the year. Some of the most publicized are Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure and the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer. Anyone can participate in these activities as well as Relay for Life, a community-based event that includes cancer survivors.
