Badminton is a racquetball game played by two opposing players or between teams of two. It combines aspects of several sports, including tennis and racquetball. Badminton is played with a lightweight racket and a shuttle, a feathered-style projectile. International badminton is governed by the Badminton World Federation, which also creates the rules for competitive badminton.
Game Rules
Play begins with a serve, in which one player stands behind the service line and hits the ball over the net to their opponent, who is positioned diagonally from the server. Once the shuttlecock is in play, teams continue to hit it back and forth, until it is no longer in play or a team commits a fault. The team that wins the point serves for the next point.
Equipment Rules
Badminton is played on a hard, flat rectangular court. The court dimensions are 13.4 meters long and 5.06 meters wide in singles badminton, and 5.9 meters wide in doubles. The net divides the court in half. The posts holding up the net should be 1.55 meters high with the net stretched firmly and flush with the top of the posts. The shuttle must be made from natural or synthetic material. It must weigh 4.74 to 5.5 g, and the base must be 25 mm to 28 mm in diameter. The racket cannot exceed 680 mm in length or 230 mm in width.
Faults
Faults during a serve include the shuttle hitting the net or the receiver's partner before it passes over the net. When in play, the shuttle cannot land out of bounds, pass through or under the net or touch the ceiling, walls or other object outside the boundaries. In addition, a team or player cannot hit the shuttle twice in succession. A player cannot touch or lean over or under the net.
Scoring Rules
A badminton match consists of three games. A team must win two games to win the match. Games are played to 21 unless the score is tied 20-20, in which case a team must win by two points or when a team reaches 30 points. Points are scored when an opposing team commits a fault or the shuttle touches the ground inside the opposition's court.
