One of the newer forms of home detox methods is the ionic foot bath. Resembling an ordinary aqua massager, this foot detox bath supposedly uses special salts and positive and negative ionic charges to draw toxins out through the bottom of your feet. According to the Ventura Center for Healing in Tarzana, California, "It is similar to walking in the sand along the beach only more powerful because your feet are in direct contact with the ions being made in the water." No scientific studies back these claims, but 30 minutes in warm water is a treat for anybody's feet.

Step 1

Wash your feet thoroughly with mild soap. Use a net scrubber or loofah to remove any dead skin that might interfere with your treatment. Rinse your feet thoroughly with warm water so no soap residue remains to interact with the ions in the water.

Step 2

Pat your skin dry with a clean towel.

Step 3

Plug in your ionic foot bath and turn it on according to the manufacturer's instructions. Each bath operates differently, so make sure you read the instructions.

Step 4

Add the special salts, if your kit included them. Let them dissolve for a few seconds.

Step 5

Soak your feet in the ionic foot bath for the amount of time recommended by the manufacturer. This is usually about 30 minutes. Relax and let the warm water do its work. Do not be alarmed when the water changes colors -- this is supposedly evidence of the toxins the ions have pulled from your body.

Step 6

Compare the color of the water to the chart that came with the ionic foot bath kit to see what parts of your body were supposedly most affected. There is no scientific evidence this actually works, but anything that leads you to a more healthy lifestyle is a good thing.

Tips and Warnings

  • Apply a moisturizing foot cream to your feet once you have dried them off. This allows for silky, soft skin.
  • Never walk away from an ionic foot bath without unplugging it.
