The Japanese art of karate is translated as "empty hand." This is because karate practitioners are taught how to use their bare hands and feet to protect themselves. Karate students spend years developing these fighting skills. Along the way, students also develop a set of life skills that can benefit them outside of the dojo. Karate students learn about respect, goal-setting, focus, perseverance and confidence.

Respect

From the moment you walk into a karate dojo, you start learning about respect. You must bow as you enter the studio's door. Bowing is a way of showing respect to the place where you train in karate. It is also a way of showing respect to the traditions and long history of this martial art. Karate students also bow to their instructor and to fellow students to show respect. The practice of respecting other individuals becomes ingrained in the minds of karate practitioners. You may not go around bowing to people outside of karate class, but respecting others will likely be a part of your daily life.

Goal-Setting

Karate training can improve your goal-setting skills. One of the major goals for karate students is earning the prestigious black belt. It can take several years to achieve this accomplishment. However, there are many other colored belts along the path to black belt. Each belt level requires students to demonstrate proficiency at different techniques. Studying karate can help you understand that a big goal is not easily attained in one step. Karate shows that you need to successfully take the right small steps to ultimately reach your goal.

Focus

Another life skill that karate can help develop is focus. It takes incredible focus and accuracy to punch and kick pads or boards in karate classes. You also need to focus when practicing maneuvers with training partners or else someone could get seriously injured. This ability to focus can benefit you at work or even while driving.

Perseverance

Karate classes are typically not easy. In order to get better at techniques and pass your belt tests, you need to work hard. Karate students repeatedly do kicks and punches during their classes. They also throw each other onto mats and spar in matches. In addition, karate instructors whip their students into shape with push-ups and sit-ups. If you can persevere through the workouts in a karate dojo, then it can give you the fortitude to persevere through other challenges in your life.

Confidence

One of the greatest life skills that karate can give you is self-confidence. There are many events in karate classes that can boost your confidence. Breaking boards or winning sparring matches are two examples. Having the knowledge that you can defend yourself is also something that increases your confidence. If karate helps you walk around with more self-assured, then others will likely notice it.
