Autism is a disorder that seems more prevalent than it was in the past. This could be due to better recognition and diagnosis, or there may be environmental factors causing the increase. While much is still unknown about autism, the sooner a child is diagnosed and begins treatment the better the outcome, according to the Help Guide. A two-year-old with autism displays symptoms that can be red flags for the disorder. A two-year old has already reached many of the milestones affected by autism, and parents may see a loss of ability in an autistic child when it comes to these developmental steps. Working with the child's pediatrician is the best way to diagnose and treat autism.

Social Interaction

Impairment in social interaction is perhaps the biggest indicator that a two-year-old may be autistic. At this age, children should be able to have rudimentary conversations in which many of their words are understood. However, according to Help Guide, autistic children at this age will display a lack of interest in other people and in their surroundings. They will have trouble engaging in play with others, and will also lack empathy and have trouble expressing their emotions. Additionally, a two-year-old who spends time with children his own age may be unable to make and maintain friendships.

Communication

Many two-year-olds who have autism may begin to communicate and later lose those skills. This is a good time to begin treatment, as the skills can be relearned. Verbal and nonverbal communication skills will be affected and can translate into delayed or repressed speaking and comprehension of language. Children at this age will also display gestures or facial expressions that are inappropriate if they're affected by autism. This can include lack of eye contact, according to Kids Health. Not pointing at objects or people to show curiosity or to communicate a need is another big indicator of autism at two years of age.

Repetition

Two-year-olds with autism often display repetitive behavior, such as hand flapping or rocking as a way to soothe themselves. Help Guide says these are called self-stimulatory behaviors. They are often engaged in when the child is frustrated or experiencing stress. Autism also causes a two-year-old to have trouble when a strict routine is disturbed. They often become attached to an object, such as a toy, or show an obsession over a certain object, television show or activity.
