ADD stands for attention deficit disorder, which is what the disorder used to be called. It is now more commonly referred to as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, ADHD. The three types of ADHD are inattentive, hyperactive/impulsive or a combination of the two. The behaviors associated with the disorder will disrupt a 6-year-old child's life in school and at home. Baby Center says that most research points to genetic and neurological causes for ADHD, but that much research is still being conducted. Environment can influence ADHD, but does not cause it. If a parents suspects that the disorder is present in their 6-year-old, they should contact their child's pediatrician for an evaluation.

Inattention

Behaviors that indicate inattention in a 6-year-old are ones that a parent will generally see from time to time in most kids this age. However, when ADHD is present these symptoms are more severe and occur with more regularity. According to Help Guide, this includes frequent daydreaming, difficulty focusing, trouble listening and being easily distracted when doing schoolwork or when playing. Six-year-olds with ADHD also exhibit lack of follow through when given directions, forgetting schoolwork or personal belongings, and being generally disorganized and losing things often. Finally, kids this age will try to avoid doing things that require their attention for long periods of time.

Hyperactivity

A 6-year-old with ADHD will be fidgety and squirmy when they are supposed to be sitting still. This is most evident in the classroom as children this age are required to sit still and complete school work for a large portion of the day. These children will also have trouble playing quietly and will display inappropriate sound volume. Finally, 6-year-olds will be up moving about when they are not supposed to be. In the classroom they will often leave their desk and wander around the room, according to Help Guide.

Impulsivity

ADHD for a 6-year-old can mean that they display impulsive behaviors and poor judgement. Many of these children will answer questions before they are finished or display impatience and an inability to wait their turn to act or speak. These children will have trouble waiting in line, for example, says Baby Center. Additionally, a 6-year-old with the disorder will act or speak without thinking about the consequences first, will interrupt others frequently and will have trouble controlling strong emotions, such as anger.
