The Pocono Mountains area is a popular weekend retreat for those looking to escape to the great outdoors, and once you have seen the range of activities on offer across its 2,400 square miles of spectacular scenery, it's easy to see why. A wide variety of accommodation options exist to suit all budgets, and adventure seekers from near and far will find an abundance of sporting opportunities, varying from the extreme to the gentle.
Winter Sports
During the winter months, the Poconos become a magical wonderland where you can downhill ski, cross-country ski, snowboard and dogsled, drive a snowmobile or simply sit in the back of a horse-drawn carriage. A popular option that requires little skill is tubing on an inflatable sled at the downhill runs at Jack Frost, Big Boulder and Camelback resorts. There are half-pipe and terrain parks available at many of the resorts and some offer the chance to ice fish.
Camping
One way to experience the thrill of the Poconos is by pitching your tent or parking your RV in one of the area's dedicated campgrounds. Some sites shut for the winter and an early reservation is essential any time of year to guarantee the best lakeside spots. There are grounds catering to all requirements, with Wi-Fi and cable TV for those who need to stay connected, and boating, fishing and rafting if you want to switch off. Some sites also have wooden cabins, lodges and trailers for rent.
Water Sports
With 150 lakes within the mountain range, the Poconos has plenty to offer those who love to get on the water, from kayaking in Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area to water-skiing in Beltzville State Park. You can rent a boat from numerous companies in the area, learn to white-water raft on the Delaware River or fish on the Shawnee River. Many activities are seasonal, so check availability before you travel.
Adrenaline Sports
Experience the thrill of the Poconos by falling 13,500 feet in one minute on an adrenaline-fueled skydive, with views extending as far as the Manhattan skyline. Although its name translates as the "stream between two mountains," the Poconos region offers much more than just impressive scenery. Thrill seekers can also head to Pocono Raceway to take part in a stock car racing experience, where you can drive at speeds of up to 170 mph around the 2.5-mile track.
Horseback Riding
Get back to nature on the back of a horse. With numerous companies offering rides at all levels and in a relaxed environment, this activity provides another great way to see the Pocono Mountains at their best. Most stables are open year-round and you can walk, trot or gallop for one hour or longer along scenic trails that take you back to a time when life moved at a slower pace.
