There are some things you can expect to experience on every Hawaiian island such as a welcoming aloha, beautiful beaches and luaus, just to name a few. Yet each island also has its unique experiences. On the Big Island, you can expect a world of adventure, from its volcanoes, horseback riding trails and exotic sea life to ancient lava-formed golf courses, just to name a few.
Water Recreation
Surfing is a big Hawaiian pastime. You can push your beach day on the Big Island to the limit by renting a board and catching the waves. Kayaking is another popular water activity in Hawaii. The waters of the Big Island boast an exotic array of Pacific sea creatures. Snorkel along the coral reefs and swim with the dolphins by day. The manta rays are a vision underwater at night.
Land Recreation
Golfers can practice their swing on golf courses formed from the lava of ancient volcano eruptions on the Big Island. Hike the Ala Kahakai National Historic trail, where you will view ancient Hawaiian settlements and exotic ecosystems along the way. For a more laid-back land exploration, choose a horseback riding trail with views of waterfalls and green pastures while receiving a history lesson from a Hawaiian cowboy as your tour guide.
Mind, Body and Soul
Easing away your cares from the inside and outside is easy at one of the Big Island's spa and wellness facilities. Big Island Hawaii is easily one of the worlds best wellness destinations. It is home to a number of world-class day and extended-stay spas. Treatments are formulated from the island's natural resources and laced with the healing traditions of the rich Hawaiian native culture and indigenous wisdom.
Tourism
You can't visit the Big Island without at least one trip to a volcano site. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is home to the volcano goddess affectionately named Pele. Pele has been erupting a stream of lava into the sea since 1983. It is unknown when the eruption will end. It could possibly last a few centuries or end any day now. Visit the Volcano Art Center at the park during one of its cultural events, held throughout the year to celebrate the presence of this natural wonder, with the Big Islands' artists and dancers.
Entertainment
There is a spirit of continuous celebration on the Big Island Hawaii. Year round between Hilo, Kona and Kau you can experience one of the Big Island's high-energy cultural festivals. During their festivals the streets are filled with tourists and natives alike patronizing local business stands, indulging in a variety of Hawaiian cuisine and taking in the sights and sounds of Hawaii's cultural performances. Catch a dramatic play, musical or big production dance show at one of the Big Island's theaters for a more subdued atmosphere of entertainment.
