Swimming is an activity enjoyed by many people and can be done indoors and outdoors. Swimming is something done by those young and old regardless of physical ability. It is important to know how to swim for boating, wading, or just playing at the pool. When you enter water without knowing how to swim you put yourself and those around you in great danger.
Statistics
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have found that 25 percent of all drowning victims are younger than 14 years old. In addition, men are 3.4 times more likely to die from drowning accidents. Although not everyone involved in drowning dies, those involved often suffer irreversible brain damage. The CDC has found most younger people have better swimming abilities than those that are older.
Never Swim Alone
Basic water safety rules can make swimming a safer activity. It is important to never swim alone. Even those that are skilled swimmers should swim under the supervision of a lifeguard or other person. Even if you are swimming in shallow water it is important to have another person present. Children can drown in as little as 2 inches of water according to Kids Health. In addition, even if you are swimming with another person another person should know where you are if at all possible.
Alcohol
Alcohol and water don't mix. Alcohol impairs your judgment that can lead to more severe water related injuries. Even if you are just watching others swim, you shouldn't drink alcohol. Alcohol is involved in nearly half of all water related deaths. Just as alcohol endangers driving it can make swimming change from a fun activity to something that can be deadly.
Water Conditions
When you are swimming, it is important to know the conditions. In an indoor pool it is important to know how deep the water is in your location. Often pools slope from shallow to deep water and the change can be very quick. If you are outside it is important to know both water conditions and weather conditions. Swimming during a thunderstorm is extremely dangerous and it is vital to be prepared for a storm. In addition in a lake or the ocean it is important to know about water currents, water temperature, and water depth. Water that is too cold can result in hypothermia and water currents can push even the strongest swimmer away from the shore.
Know Your Limits
When swimming, it is important to know your own limits. If you are a weak swimmer you should stay in shallow water. Also, stay aware of how tired you are while swimming. Strong swimmers that are fatigued can be in danger of drowning. All people should take swimming lessons to improve their swimming abilities and to enable them to stay safe in any water situation.
