Hybrid golf clubs are like long irons with super powers. They have the ability, like long irons, to hit high long shots from good lies in the fairway. But they also have the ability to hit solid long shots from the rough and can even hit delicate shots from around the green. They will add versatility to your game, if you match your technique to your situation.
From the Fairway
From the fairway, your hybrids can deliver high, soft shots or low, driving shots--all you have to do is select a ball position to match your desire. To hit a high shot downwind or over a tree, simply play the ball forward in your stance, two inches inside your left heel. To drive it low into the wind, play the ball in the center of your stance. Hybrids naturally hit the ball farther than traditional long irons, so relax and swing smoothly.
From the Rough
Your ball might be sitting "up" in the rough with little grass between the ball and your club face. Or you could have a "muffled" lie, with the ball surrounded by grass. If the ball is up, play the ball two inches inside your left heel, and impact the ball slightly on the upswing. If it is muffled, play the ball in the center of your stance, and impact the ball with a downward blow.
From the Fringe
Hybrids are great for long shots, but they are great for shots around the green, too. When you use a short iron from the green-side rough, you run the risk of the hosel getting trapped by the grass, which will hinder the club's ability to deliver a crisp shot. The hybrid has no hosel to get trapped and will glide smoothly through the turf. Simply stroke this shot the same way you would stroke a putt.
