The city of San Francisco is a big kid's playground that you can explore and experience with all the senses. There are plenty of cool things to do: top-notch restaurants varying from world-class dining to street-food vendors, several art museums and monuments that depict San Francisco's history, and a variety of other attractions.

Golden Gate Bridge

The Golden Gate Bridge is the international symbol of San Francisco, and the most appreciated bridges in the world. The Golden Gate Bridge can be seen by driving over it, but for the adventurous type, try hiking, walking or biking it instead. The sidewalks are open to pedestrians during the daylight hours. Wear comfortable shoes and a few layers of clothing, as the temperature can change quickly.

Golden Gate Park

Visit the Golden Gate Park. Spend the day exploring this famous San Francisco park that has a larger area than New York's Central Park. The park is home to several gardens and museums. One of the most popular sights is the Japanese Tea Garden, but there is plenty more to enjoy as well. Take a ride on the carousel built in 1912 that boasts over 60 different animals. Paddle boats may also be rented at the park's Stow Lake, or simply watch the radio controlled boats found on the Spreckels Lake. The park is open from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. (as of 2010).

Cable Cars

Ride on the famed cable cars of San Francisco, the city's moving landmarks that serve as both public transportation and tourist attraction. They are a great way to explore the city; you can catch many of San Francisco's visual treats on the three different lines. Two of the lines start at the same location: Powell and Market. Purchase fares at stations or with the conductor. Fares are required for each ride, or a Muni passport may be purchased, which gives you unlimited rides for a certain amount of time. The rate is $5 (as of 2010) for ages 5 and up; children under the age of 5 ride for free. Senior fare is $1. Cable cars run from 6:00 a.m. until 1:00 a.m.

Chinatown

Chinatown in San Francisco is one of the largest Chinese communities in the country. The best time to visit Chinatown is mid-day, when the most activity takes place. It is located on Grant and Stockton, and runs about eight blocks. Maps can be printed online for a self-guided tour of the history and markets located all over San Francisco's Chinatown.

Museums

San Francisco is home to various museums, beautiful parks and aquariums that highlight the earth's natural elements and wildlife. Through the Bay Area's museums, discover the history of how San Francisco came to be. Popular museums include the Exploratorium Science Museum, Cartoon Art Museum, Wax Museum at Fisherman's Wharf and the Aquarium of the Bay.
