Facial hair, and body hair for that matter, is either vellus, terminal or intermediate. Vellus is thin and light, terminal is dark and thick and intermediate shows characteristics of both. When it comes to removing facial hair, regardless of its thickness, you have various options to choose from. Each one requires different types of equipment and you can remove the hair right from home.
Shaving Tools
Shaving is a type of hair removal that involves multiple pieces of equipment. Shaving cream, a razor blade, towel and skin moisturizer are all needed. If you want to get as close a shave as possible, use flexible razor blades. If your hair is really thick and long, a pair of scissors or electric clippers can be used to trim it down before shaving. Once you have all of your tools, wash your face, lather on shaving cream and run the razor blade over your skin in short, smooth strokes to remove the hair. After you are done, apply the moisturizer to keep your skin conditioned.
Plucking Tool
Plucking is a type of hair removal that only requires a pair of tweezers. To get as close to the skin as possible, use a pair of angled tweezers. Place your fingers on your skin with the hair in between, grasp a single hair with the tweezers and steadily pull it straight out. Repeat with all the hairs you want removed. This type of removal is reserved for small areas like between the eyebrows.
Waxing Equipment
Waxing is a form of facial hair removal where the hair gets ripped out by the roots. Equipment needed for waxing includes the wax itself, an applicator tool and a durable cloth strip or muslin. When getting a home kit, all of these tools are supplied. You can also get them separately. To wax your facial hair, apply the heated wax to your hair, let it set up and flatten out the cloth strip over top of it. In a fast, steady motion, pull the strip off of your face.
Dissolving Equipment
Depilatories dissolve the keratin in hair which gives it strength. The depilatory cream and a washcloth are the only tools necessary for this procedure. To remove hair with a depilatory, apply a warm washcloth to your face, spread the depilatory cream over your skin and let it stand for five to 10 minutes, or however long is recommended by the manufacturer. Using the washcloth, wipe the skin, using some pressure, to remove the hair and cream.
