Skin Care Tips for Open Pores

Your pores perform important functions for your skin's health, but excessively large, open pores may detract from the smooth appearance you crave. Several skincare strategies, ranging from home treatments to medical procedures performed by a doctor, can help you minimize or even modify the size of your pores.

Keep Pores Clear

Pores that become clogged with oil, dead skin cells, dirt and other matter will stay open and may appear larger and swollen. Regularly applying topical treatments that help keep pores clear can also help with the appearance of open pores. The Mayo Clinic recommends salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide as some of the most effective products for keeping pores clean.

Cool Them Down

Apply a cold compress to your skin or splash yourself with ice-cold water. The cool temperatures cause your skin to contract and your pores to close. Though this effect is temporary, it can alleviate your pore problems long enough to apply other facial products, like makeup, to help cover your problem.

Try Tretinoin

Ask your dermatologist to prescribe a tretinoin cream. This powerful skin ingredient not only helps to keep your pores clear, thus potentially helping with pore size, but may also help reduce signs of aging, like wrinkles and skin discoloration, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Cosmetic Procedures

Certain cosmetic procedures can help physically reduce your pore size for a rejuvenated, healthier look to your skin. For shrinking pores and improving your skin's tone and color, the American Academy of Dermatology recommends an intense pulsed light session. This uses targeted light rays to modify your skin structure.

Use a Chemical Peel

Chemical peels, whether they're done at home or by a spa or dermatologist, can be done multiple times a year and help to slough off dead skin cells for a brighter and more youthful look. The Mayo Clinic says it can help with pore size, as well as skin discoloration and other skin health maladies.

Smooth on a Serum

Your large, open pores may suck in your makeup and make your final look appear patchy or uneven. Keep your makeup from sinking into your pores by using a silicone-based serum or primer. This fills your pores and wrinkles before you add your makeup for a more flawless, even look.
