Throughout history, herbs have been used to treat various ailments, such as wounds, snake bite, fever, flu, diarrhea and the common cold. Today, natural and alternative health practitioners still believe in the medicinal value of herbs to treat everything from the common cold to preventing cancer. There are an array of natural healing herbs available, all of which are believed to have their own unique healing properties. It is always important to consult with a physician or health care professional before using herbal remedies.

Echinacea

Echinacea is a versatile herb that has been used all over the world and is believed to have many medicinal benefits. It is believed to boost the immune system to fight off disease and infection. According to "The Healing Herbs," by Michael Castleman, echinacea may even be used to strengthen white blood cells in cancer patients who are receiving radiation therapy. Historically, echinacea was used by early Americans to treat wounds and snake bites. Today, it is still thought to be effective in disinfecting wounds and promoting faster healing. Discontinue use if you experience digestive upset or diarrhea.

Celery Seed

Celery seed is reputed to have strong diuretic properties and has been used in ancient healing practices, such as Ayurveda. Celery seed can be used to ease water retention, eliminate the excess fluid that can build up as a result of congestive heart failure and treat the bloating that commonly accompanies premenstrual syndrome. It is also thought to be effective in lowering high blood pressure and helping to regulate blood sugar. As a diuretic, celery seed may lower the body's potassium levels, making it necessary to consume high-potassium foods, such as bananas. Side effects may include diarrhea and stomach upset.

Ginseng

Ginseng is another very popular and versatile healing herb. According to "The Healing Herbs," ginseng was originally used in ancient Asian healing practices. It is thought to strengthen the body against radiation, toxins and stress. It is also believed to improve the memory and ease fatigue. Ginseng is also reputed to boost the immune system, reduce the risk of heart attack, lower cholesterol levels, protect the liver and decrease blood sugar levels. It has been used by the Chinese to prolong the lives of those who suffer from stomach cancer. Side effects include breast soreness, insomnia, elevated blood pressure, asthma attacks and cardiac disturbances.
