3 Ways to Identify Cervicitis

1. Recognize Common Symptoms of Cervicitis

Cervicitis is a very common gynecological disorder that affects nearly half of all women at some point in their lives. It is identified by inflammation of the cervix. You can tell whether you may have cervicitis in part by checking your symptoms. The most common symptoms of cervicitis are abnormal vaginal bleeding, abnormal vaginal discharge, itching, vaginal pain and abdominal/lower back pain and/or pressure. These symptoms are common with other gynecological disorders as well, including vaginitis, so it's important to get properly diagnosed by a physician.

2. Recognize How Sexual Intercourse and Cervicitis Relate

Painful intercourse is another common symptom of cervicitis. Sexual positions that lend themselves to deep penetration usually cause the most pain for women with cervicitis because the cervix is located in the upper part of the vagina. If you have never had sexual intercourse, you may still have cervicitis, but it's unlikely. Most cases of cervicitis are caused by a sexually transmitted disease (STD) or latex and spermicide allergies. There are other non-sexual things that cause a small number of cases, however, including allergy to chemicals (douches) and tampons.

3. Get a Proper Diagnosis

Because the symptoms of cervicitis are so similar to other gynecological disorders, only a physician can properly identify the disease. This usually involves a detailed medical history and pelvic examination. In the pelvic exam, the cervix is directly examined for inflammation both visually and manually. A swab of the cervix will be taken for a Pap smear to eliminate the possibility of cervical cancer. Additional swaps for STD tests and examination under a microscope will probably be taken as well. The pelvic exam will likely be uncomfortable, but you should tell your doctor if you feel pain. A diagnosis of cervicitis can usually be made fairly easily, but your doctor will have to identify the cause to begin treatment.
