The Side Effects of Nux Vomica

Nux vomica is a small tree that features a thick trunk and shiny, deep-green leaves. The tree bears seeds that are used for a variety of medical purposes. It is most commonly used to treat upset stomach and heartburn, according to Botanical.com. Unfortunately, nux vomica can also have several side effects, some of which can be severe.

Convulsions

According to Botanical.com, nux vomica can cause violent convulsions. These convulsions occur because of stimulation of the spinal cord's sensory or motor ganglia. Seizures can be painful, and can occur within 15 minutes of inhalation or ingestion.

Muscle Pain

Physical pain is a common side effect of nux vomica, according to Margery Grace Blackie, author of "Comparison of Arsnicum, Nitricum Acidum, Hepar Sulphuris and Nux Vomica." This typically includes muscle cramps and skin that is sensitive to the touch.

Liver Damage

The strychnine in nux vomica seeds stays in the liver for months, and is excreted very slowly, notes Botanical.com. This means that strychnine buildup can occur in the liver with repeated use. This buildup can cause permanent liver damage.
