San Francisco is an ideal destination for the active-minded traveler. With some of the most photographed city sights in the world, San Francisco is a hub for travelers both young and old. However, the city's most frequented tourist spots like Lombard Street, the Golden Gate Bridge, and Alcatraz are only a preview of the many engaging experiences to be had in San Francisco.

Golden Gate Bridge

One of the best ways to see the city is to stretch your legs on a walk of the Golden Gate Bridge. Parking is available at either end of the bridge. Just remember to bring your camera along for the stroll. Both pedestrians and bicyclists can cross using the large pathways over the bridge. Various observation decks along the bridge make for excellent photos with a backdrop of the city.

Labyrinths of Nob Hill

Ride a cable car to Grace Cathedral on Nob Hill and walk the limestone labyrinths. The giant bronze doors of the Grace Cathedral created by Lorenzo Ghiberti welcome you to the largest cathedral in California. The labyrinths at Grace Cathedral have only one path, so there are no secret passages in place to confuse you. Walking the labyrinths is said to release stress and inspire empowerment.

Golden Gate Park

Rent a bike from one of the dozens of bike rental companies outside of Golden Gate Park and spend the day bicycling the park. The three-mile-long park area includes handfuls of scenic trails for bikers and hikers alike. Be sure to pack a light sweater. Even in the summer the Bay Area can get cool in a hurry as a result of heavy fog off the ocean.

Angel Island

Enjoy a short ferry ride to Angel Island located in the San Francisco Bay. Once on the island, spend the afternoon wandering the different establishments, such as Camp Reynolds, which was built by the U.S. Army in the 1800s and today stands as one of the remaining Civil War buildings in the country. Both walking tours and guided tram tours around the island run several times a day. Stop by the island cafe and pick up a picnic snack to enjoy on the beach.

The Exploratorium

Explore the Exploratorium in the Palace of Fine Arts building. This is a perfect activity for families with young kids. The interactive museum features plenty of science exhibits for children of all ages. Discover how electricity works, why the sky is blue, and so many other interesting scientific principles in a hands-on setting.
