San Francisco is a bay city characterized by its cool, dry summers and wet winters. The area encourages a healthy, well-rounded lifestyle with its diverse cultural and ethnic population. Additionally, you can sight see various historical landmarks and stay active with the many recreational opportunities available within the city.

Attractions

Visit some of San Francisco's famous attractions including the Alcatraz island and the cable cars in Union Square. The Alcatraz is a desolate prison that held notorious inmates like Robert "Birdman" Stroud and Al "Scarface" Capone. Tours of the island are available and departs at Pier 33 in Embarcadero. Ride and see the city aboard the cable cars on the Powell-Mason, California Street and Powell-Hyde street lines. The cable cars have been around since 1873 and is a national historic landmark.

Golden Gate Bridge

Known as a signaure landmark of the city, the Golden Gate Bridge is a major tourist attraction. Approximately nine million people from all over the world visit each year, according to the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District. Drive, walk or bike through the bridge or take a stroll at the garden area on its southeast side. The bridge is 1.7 miles long and offers scenic water views of the city.

Fisherman's Wharf

Fisherman's Wharf is a waterfront community where you can sample fresh food such as fresh Dungeness crabs and locally made chocolate. Numerous crab house and seafood restaurants abound in the area as well as other types of cuisine. You can sign up for sportfishing and boat charters to catch game fish like bass, halibut, salmon, striped bass and rock cod. Sight seeing tours are also available right on the harbor.

Activities

Golden Gate Park and the Golden Gate National Recreation Area are places where you can enjoy recreational activities including walking through nature trails, running and windsurfing. Golden Gate Park has more than 1,000 acres of woodlands and gardens. Bird watching for hawks and herons are common at the park.

Culture

Experience the area's diverse cultural and arts background. Lombard Street, Chinatown and Castro District are places of ethnic and cultural interest. San Francisco Chinatown is the the oldest of its kind in North America and the largest Chinatown outside of Asia. The city has a vibrant gay community in the Castro District where people of all orientations can find unique shops, bars and restaurants. For art, top places to consider are de Young Museum, Asian Art Museum and Museum of Modern Art.
